Approximate Purchase Date: anytime in the next 3-7 days

Budget Range: Max budget of $500 including OS and MS Office (Excel and Word minimum), ideally I want to see how low I can get this build.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Home office (email, word processing, excel, internet, basic video i.e Youtube)

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: No upgrades

Do you need to buy OS: Yes, Windows 8 32 or 64bit

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Newegg, TigerDirect, Amazon, Microcenter.

Location: Kansas City, Kansas

Parts Preferences: given the budget AMD seems most likely, but I have no preference to brand. I would like to use a SSD as the prices have become reasonable and boot speed is valued.

Overclocking: No, never

SLI or Crossfire: No, never

Your Monitor Resolution: Not sure, the monitor is an older 22" CRT type, 1280x1024?

Additional Comments: Building a new computer for my mother due to her older computer wearing down. She is interested in having a fast boot speed (SSD with useable capacity 80-250GB). She won't need anything graphically intensive so an integrated motherboard (sound and video) should suffice so long as it can handle typical Youtube videos. She does not require any bells and whistles beyond a simple computer to check email, use Word and Excel to look at some work files, internet browse, and play low graphic games like Bejeweled. The longevity of the computer is probably most effected by her maintenance of the computer, however quality parts should be highly valued (inexpensive parts compared to cheap parts, if that makes sense?)

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: old computer (purchased in 2003) is no longer viable.

Primary parts needed:
CPU
MOBO (prefer integrated, but a cheap GPU is fine)
HD
Memory
Optical drive
Power Supply
Tower (the fewer LEDs the better! 1-2 fans is more than enough)
Windows 8
Wireless network card

That's what I was afraid of needing to do, was hoping I could avoid the pre-built stuff. MS Office can be pulled out of the build until later, I think we may be able to get it through her work.

At $500 and below, there's not a lot of difference.

With wanting to use a SSD and the general annoyance at all of the Geek Squad randomly installed software, I was still leaning towards doing a build. I'll have to do some Black Friday hunting and see what specials are out there for an SSD, and I may be able to recycle her current tower.

I was hoping to see if I could fit about $300-$350 worth of non-software into a low-end build.
