Win 8 connection to ipad get "local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration"

My Sony vaio win8 looks like its connected to my ipad for Internet, but no joy. When I troubleshoot it I get "wireless network doesn't have a valid ip configuration". Doesn't seem to matter whether I use bluetooth or wifi to connect.

Any insight?

if the ipad has got internet connection then the internet should be working for anything. as long as you have a wifi hotspot or similar (I'm not sure what it's called on IOS) then it should work fine on automatic settings. just make sure that nothing is set to manual on both devices.

what are you trying to accomplish by connecting the two devices? is the ipad a cellular one which has internet, and you're trying to link them so the sony via can access the internet?

The pad is connected to Internet cellularly. I'm trying to use that Internet connection from my PC. After reading about similar problems, I realize it might have to do with changing Internet carrier recently, as the Internet connection used to work.
