Encrypting External Hard Drive

I have a Toshiba Hard drive that has some info that I do not want to share on it. I heard about bitlocker and researched it a bit. Should I use bitlocker to encrypt the whole external hard drive? or is there another software thats better? Im already using a good portion of the hard drive.
Will bitlocker make the performance on my external hd decrease?

I don't believe so. It can encrypt the whole system drive (with Windows), but not an external drive without creating an encrypted volume.
You make the volume, then move data into it.

Ive used truecrypt before, the whole process is a little much (must have truecrypt downloaded to view files,find the volume,etc.). Id just like to password protect the whole external hard drive. Is there an application for that?
