Hi everyone,

I am looking to upgrade the video card in my son’s computer for Christmas, and I want to be sure that it will work in his computer before I buy it. The budget is 60$, and the main concern is not having to upgrade the power supply or motherboard, but to still let games like Skyrim run on lower settings without a ton of lag-if possible. Thanks for any help!

you could get a radeon hd 7750 for a bit over budget. check the existing gpu and if it's low profile grab the low profile version of the new card. it's your best gpu for that psu. anything above will require a psu upgrade too.

and before you ask, yes the pci ex port is backwards compatible so it doesnt matter that the 7750 says pci ex 3.0 and you have 2.0 only.

Thanks for the response and the link- do you have any suggestions that would fall under the budget? Unfortunately, the price is the big factor at the moment.

The graphics cards within your budget that will give you the most bang for the buck are the AMD Radeon 6670 and 6570. Refer to this Toms article with graphical representations of the performance along with a hierarchy chart on the next to last page.

Also here are the Anandtech benchmarks for the card, specifially the 6670. The resolution of the monitor you listed is lower than the benchmark resolution so either framerates will be higher or a higher detail level is possible or some combination of the two. Also, pcpartspicker.com is a fantastic resource for finding the parts you are looking for at the lowest prices for new hardware.
