How do I get around a program asking for .NET 2.0 on a Windows 7 64-bit system?

I am running Windows 7 64-bit, and am trying to install, of all things, a Microsoft program (Bing Maps 3D). Towards the end of installation, the program states that I need .NET 2.0 installed, and then it halts with an "installation failed" message. .NET 4 is of course installed with the OS, and yes, it's enabled. Is there a workaround for this?? Many thanks!

There is no way to skirt around this as far as I know. Either the installer or the program itself was written with the idea of using .NET framework so if you can't find a way to get exactly what the program requires, you won't be able to install it.

Go download the .Net Framework 2.0 redistribute-able package. .Net 4.0 Framework does not mean you have everything from .Net 2.0. It will even show up in Add/remove programs as a separate program. You might need updates for it also from Windows update service.

I've already tried installing it, but it will not install, saying it is already there. It is not listed in add/remove programs, but still absolutely will not install.

Check inside Programs & Features > Turn On/Off Windows Features>.NET Framework Entry and see if there is anything in the drop down menu to enable.

There is also an Optional Download on Windows Update for Legacy .NET Framework 1.1

It is also possible you may need to remove .NET 4.0 and start installing from .NET 2.0. I've never had to do that but it is an option. What program is requesting .NET 2.0? If it is browser based, you may want to make sure you have ASP.Net enabled inside Windows Features>IIS>

As stated, the program I am trying to install is Bing Maps 3D. I don't have time to do a bunch of fiddling, since I just wanted it for a geology project, so I'm just going to use Google Earth. Thanks for the help!

That program won't run on Windows 7. You can try to install it under compatibility mode though. You're already going to the right product to use in it's stead though, just giving some more info on the issue.

"Bing! Maps 3D is not compatible with:

Windows 7"

It's a pretty old program, the requirements mention IE 6.

You'll also need:
Minimum Recommended
Processor: 1 GHz 2,8 GHz
Memory: 256 MB 1 MB
Video: 32 MB 256 MB
Free space: 250 MB
DirectX: DirectX 9.0.
Framework: Internet Explorer 6.0.
