Hi,

I posted this on here a while back and had no luck, i think because i posted in the wrong section.
Anyway, this problem is driving me mad.

The problem is this. My gpu fan randomly goes full blast and wont stop. Sometimes, but rarely, it happens as soon as i hit the power switch, but more often it will happen randomly, from just a few minutes after start-up to an hour.

It doesnt matter what im doing, whether its playing a game or browsing the web. The temperatures are fine and even the fan speed shows as 20%, even though its hitting #3500rpm.

Ive tried controlling it with MSI, with CCC, even uninstalled GPU-Z and MSI in case of conflict. Uninstalled and re-installed the latest drivers for my card, even cleaned up the old ones with driversweeper.
Ive scanned for adware, malware, spyware etc... many times. Ive checked the wires, reseated the card, cleaned out any dust etc...

Can anyone shed any light on what this could be?
At this stage im considering upgrading to a new card but im not even sure that it is the card, so i want to be certain of whats the cause and make sure ive tried every possible solution.

Please help.
Thanks.

My system specs;

GPU: HIS Iceq 6870
CPU: AMD FX8320
MB: ASUS M5A78L-LE

Hello... sounds like the Tach feedback of the fan is going bad... can you un-plug the GPU fan, and clean the connector pins, and plug back in for re- testing? Fans can be replaced... but are you sure your GPU heatsink and thermal compound is attached properly? and your GPU temps are in the norm?

I dont know what the "Tach Feedback" is to be honest. I already cleaned the pins and blew out the socket with air.
As for the heatsink and compound, well oddly enough after i posted this i read somewhere a guy mentioning that the thermal compound could be worn, or something along those lines. So opened my card up carefully and unattached the fan side of the card and had a look. Now just to be clear, i would consider myself knowledgeable enough with hardware, not an expert but i built this PC last year and learned a lot from it. But ive no experience with heatsinks and thermal paste. Anyway, when i opened up my card a few minutes ago, the compound was unevenly spread on the heatsink, dry like putty and some of it was off to the side....so i thought this was it, maybe ive found the problem, so i never went near the compound on the heatsink but cleaned up the loose bit on the outside with a cotton ear tip, put everything back together and powered on my pc. To my disappointment the fan was full blast from the get-go, which rarely happens, so maybe i made it worse.

Sorry for the long answer, i just wanted give a good picture of things.
Thanks for your response Ironsounds, i eagerly await to see what you have to say about this.
Thanks.

Hello.... please go to the local Radio Shack/Computer Store? and get some fresh wet thermal heatsink compound on that GPU... "Tach feedback" is a voltage signal, a 4-wire Fan sends back to allow monitoring of fan speed, and Thus proper control of the Voltage going out to the FAN, for actual Speed... Just like a Car or truck tachometer to show engine speed.

I see.
I will do as soon as possible and see how it goes. Thanks man, really appreciate the help.

So i eventually applied the thermal paste and nothing has changed!
I also realized that for the last week or so i cant remember the fan being quite, it seems to be at full blast constantly now, right from start up.
By the way i applied the paste today.

Can anyone shed some light on this, i feel at my wits end with this, such an irritating problem and i dont want to get a new card because of a loud fan.

Anyone?

Hello... Can you load the GPUZ App http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ and tell us what your actual Fan Speed and GPU temp is?
Maybe your Driver version changed this? did this happen after a software upgrade?
Can you order a New/Fan replacement for this Popular GPU Fan model? measure the mounting holes for proper fit, and make sure it has a 4 wire/pin connector type.

First off, thanks for helping again Ironsounds.

I cant get to my pc at the moment, but as of last night, it was, and always is, around 30-35c. Fan Speed at 20%, although i changed it with numerous software with no affect on the actual speed which is around 3000-3500rpm.
Sometimes it will slow down, relatively speaking, to around 2700/2800rpm, only to shoot back up minutes later.

I dont know if i'll bother replacing the fan. Is there anyway i could fix it myself?

I plan on getting a new GPU in time for Witcher 3, but i would like to fix it for the time being and more importantly, i want make sure its the card itself and not my motherboard or something else that could affect a new GPU.

At this stage, what would you put your money on being the cause, Ironsounds?

Hello... 1) Maybe all your "numerous software" has got it all confused? Un-install all the GPU fan software, and re-boot.

2) Un-install all your Video card drivers/software, and re-boot, then download and install a new/different version of the Drivers Only, ( No catalyst center or Add-on software )... and re-boot. Trying to determine if Driver only install will change Fan performance.

I would ( if it was mine ) Go get a AMD BIO's reading program to determine what the Fan settings are programed into the Firmware/BIO's...
I would ( if it was mine ) Re-flash the GPU Firmware/BIOs...
I would ( if it was mine ) Re-flash the GPU Firmware/BIOs with a custom fan profile...

Well the only reason i have all those software is because of the problem, the problem came before i got them and then i downloaded the likes of MSI, GPU-Z etc... to see could i control it.
I also tried the 'uninstall everything' option to no avail. Although i will give it another try, see was their anything i missed.

The whole 'gpu bios' options seem a bit out of my depth but im willing to do some research on it and try it.
Could you give me any insight in to reflashing the gpu firmware/bios?

In any case, thanks again Ironsounds, really appreciate the help you're giving me.
