Hi,

I've been using my samsung 500gb portable usb 3 hdd with my LG 50LN5758 smart tv for a while now without a problem. I was able to browse files and play videos from it and use it with my PC.

Tonight when I plugged it in I selected yes as usual and instead it initiated some kind of record TV function.

I must stress that all the files are still there, I can see the video and music files still on the HDD and it was far too quick to have performed any kind of format. The problem is now the drive is viewed differently on the TV and doesn't even appear when connected to my PCs.

It comes up in device manager as usb mass storage as working correctly but doesn't show anywhere else. I've tried uninstalling from there and reinstalling it but nothing.

I've got lots of personal data I really cannot lose. does anyone please know how to reverse this setting?

It had wiped the drive. I plugged it back into my PC and manage to find it in 'Disk Management'. Deleted the existing partition, created a fresh one and formatted. Then used Recuvva to do a thorough sweep of the drive to get as much as I could back.

Don't think this is the last of it either. I've had it offer Time Machine II a couple of times since and luckily I've been on my toes to say no.

I know it's not perfect news but good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Had the same problem, only my HDD was empty so I just needed to use the device and had no data to preserve. You need to follow instructions from
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/external-drive-not-recognized-this-is-how-to-fix-it-in-windows/

I was able to delete the volumes LGs timemachineII created and then went on and formatted the drive. I am not sure you can salvage your data but at least you would be able to use your HDD.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I know this is an old thread but I had the same problem and hope this will help some people int the future. My problem was that I could not recognize my external USB HDD after recording something on my LG TV. My computer would recongise my USB HDD under "Devices and Printers" but it wouldn't partition it a letter in "Disk management". All my usb drivers were installed correctly .

Furthermore, I could see what i recorded in "Time-machine" on my TV but I could see anything on my PC. At the time I didn't realize that the TV would format my HDD and i lost all my movies and TV shows :-( .....

So unfortunately the only option is to re-format your harddrive, if you want to use it again....I did it this way:
-> Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK or select compmgmt.
-> In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window appears. Your disks and volumes appear in a graphical view and list view.
-> Your device should show on the right-hand-side as "Disk 1" without a Drive letter assigned to it. (to double check its the correct Disk remove your USB and connect it again)
-> Right click the blue bar and click 'Delete Volume'
-> Follow the promps after that and re-format your harddrive.
-> You have a fresh hard drive you can use again

If you want to actually recover your lost data before you used your usb in the 'LG Time-machine format'....then i'd say give it to a professional and explain what happened. However, i don't hold much hope in recovery. This is an important lesson in BACKING UP YOUR HDDs!!

Thank you all for these informations.
I had the same problem. But my question is "Is there any way to copy the TV recordings to my PC?". I asked the LG team about it. Their reply was hopeless. They said just watch your recordings on the same TV. I think this is a disadvantage on their product.
Best wishes.
