The subject tells half the story, but moreso, I want to at least have the option to switch back to windows 8 (paranoid fear of change), from what I've learned (on these boards and by looking in my computer box) is there is no windows 8 reinstall disc.

My computer is an asus ultrabook thus no interna cd/dvd drive(though I do have an external dvd drive), I tried to create a backup, but apparently it still wouldn't give me the option to save it on a dvd, it required another disk (usb?).

In a nutshell I'm asking: is this what I need to do in order to avoid the nightmares of change that invariably will occur if I don't create a backup. OR do I not actually have to do this?

ALSO, it occurs to me the Linux Mint image that I saved was on dvd... will this actually work for installing Mint since I'm using an external drive?

I swear somehow Microsoft has somehow caused me psychological damage because of the near guilt I have over leaving them after so many years.

A few options:

1. Try Mint just from a LiveCD for a while.
2. Dualboot. Since Windows is there already, the Mint install will give you the option of how to partition
3. Save an image of the current Windows partition. Resurrect it later if desired. You'll probably need an external HDD for this.

Goto "michaelminn.com/linux/eeepc. You will be using a flash drive and when you have made a copy of the Mint for the flash drive from the http://www.linuxmint.com site for installation, turn off your netbook, plug in the flash drive and do a cold boot, not a reboot: There seems to be a BIOS problem for ASUS. this site will give you all you need. Follow it carefully. PS: I love ASUS. Its the indestructible workhorse of the computer world.

Also, there is a You tube tutorial at www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIN-InkvAmg "Linux on my Asus Netbook".
You can get the "The Official User Guide, Linux Mint MATE Edition" from http://www.linuxmint.com. It will give you all kinds of information for actually installing Linux Mint. Its free just as Linux Mint is. I would recommend using "Cinnamon" because it is so friendly. But, since it is a Netbook, you may want the lightweight Mint Xfce 16 download. Lots of great features and is a true GNU/Linux.

Ditch the guilt. You owe them nothing and they could not care less about you. Get Linux and get free. You owe yourself the best, don't you? Welcome to Linux. Be well and prosper.
