PC Won't Boot Past BIOS After Hardware Change

Hey forums,

I made a couple of small changes to my build and it no longer boots past the bios. I've tried unplugging everything and putting it back in, kept it powered off for a period of time, and then took out the new components I added and put back in the old ones and it still won't boot up.

Here is what my build started with:

Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H
1TB Seagate HDD 7200RPM
i3-3220
XFX 550W 80+ Bronze
Sapphire 7850
8GB RAM Ares 1600mhz
ASUS DVD Burner
LG Bluray burner
HAF 912

For a couple weeks I kept getting a warning about my hard drive failing so I decided to get an SSD for now and get another HDD down the road. What I changed was remove the Seagate HDD and put in a 120GB Kingston SSD and then replaced the Sapphire 7850 with a Gigabyte GTX 760. I was planning to install windows on the new SSD but it boots up to the bios and then just stops.

Now I'm worried because it still won't boot up even if I put my old stuff back in. Can anyone suggest how to fix this?

You should be getting some beeps codes when your PC halts at BIOS, with that you should be able to determine what is causing the issue.

Also you could try the breadboard test, take the mobo out of the case, put it on top of a cardboard (like a mobo's box) and test if you can boot with only the CPU, 1 module of RAM and the GPU.

If you are getting the bios, go into it and go to the option that lists your boot devices. It should detect what is plugged in and list them in the order of boot sequence. If there are no boot devices found or the order is incorrect, such as booting from external device when you don't have one, it will stall and not boot at that point. You can also reset the bios to default settings if you have any custom settings programmed.

Also, make sure your drive type is set correctly in the bios you have SATA mode and AHCI. For newer systems AHCI is recommended but some older hard drives may have been configured SATA and if the Bios was configured to SATA and a newer HD or SSD is plugged in to that port it may not function correctly or lock up. If you have RAID capability on the motherboard don't plug a single drive into the RAID SATA ports unless RAID mode has been disabled from the ports first or the RAID controller will attempt to detect the drives and may fail also causing a hang. Plug in your new drive by itself in on a non RAID SATA port configured for either Auto or AHCI in the bios.

I'm sure the problem is now with the GPU...I got Windows to install on my SSD and can choose my boot order and access the BIOS just fine when that's the only thing in. Whenever I plug in the GPU though it just freezes at the BIOS and I literally can't do anything. If I try to access the BIOS I just get a beep and anything else nothing happens. It's not dead since the fans are spinning strongly and I get a display. I don't know what it is.
