How do you narrow down the location of the failure of a router or of a transmission line connecting routers

Solution
You can try to use tracert to ping another system or device it will show you at what point the packets no longer travel(by pinging each device on the path from A to B).

BUT if a system is set to not reply to pings, it will see that as a time out when it is not.

At least it may give you an idea at what point failure may be happening.

What is the exact issue you are having? wireless is even more fun as interference can cause all kinds of issues.
