Whats the differences between these cards?

they are the same price. just not sure witch one to get. it will be for casual games like rayman, roller coaster tycoon 3 and Outlast. also gonna use it as a HTPC

The Asus one is a tiny bit faster. Nothing noticeable but I'd still go for the Asus.

Same exact card just different coolers, Asus cards often have the best coolers this appears to be no exception.

from what i can tell is that the R7 has older DDR3, not sure how much difference GDDR5 makes

DDR5 is twice as fast as DDR3. If you look at the specs the R7 says : Memory Clock Speed(MHz 1800)
The Asus 7770 has a memory clock speed of 4600MHz with DDR5.
I would definitely look into the 7850 (msi twin frozr is a good deal usually). It is a lot better than the 7770 and pretty much in the same price range. Maybe even look into the 7870 if you find a good deal for it.
