Ok so my fan was speeding up and getting a little noisy when i played any game...so i downloaded speccy and it showed my cpu temp on startup around 60 degrees Celcius, so i checked the fan and its working, made sure it and the heatsink were clear of dust... still reads the same... so i went an bought some artic silver 5 thermal paste ...cleaned all the old paste off and applied a pea sized amount and reseated it... still reading the same. I ahve also tried coretemp and it reads the same...any ideas? im running an intel core 2 quad q6600...thanks

There isn't anything to worry about. You have a relatively old CPU which doesn't perform as well heat-wise as newer CPUs. I checked the specs for your CPU and it's operating at expected temperature with the stock heatsink.

CoolerMaster GeminII 524 would be a good cpu cooler upgrade with

so the cpu being 115 degrees F or 60 C is normal when i turn on the computer? i figured it should be close to my room temp which is around 75 F lol..before i applied the thermal paste the fan sped up pretty loudly ...now that i have redone it ...it seems it doesnt speed up anymore but those temps just seem high fora computer with no load lol

temp should be idling 30c to 40c max on load 55c sounds to me the cooler your using isnt working pea method isnt really best method you could try cleaning cpu cooler and silver 5 paste of cpu then apply a dot in middle use a clean gift card or plastic card ( no credit or debit cards etc just a plastic gift card) you may need more then a dot due to die being bigger) use the card to spread the paste evenly across the chip do not lift the card up when adding more so as not to create bubbles or gaps spread it evenly till you can not see the metal cpu die and reseat the cpu cooler on it make sure there is no trace of old thermal. finally cotton swab go around socket with it to remove any excess squeezed out.

reboot and see temps if its stock you will probly see it idle at 35 preforming at 55 when under load

aftermarket usually 28c idle and 45c load
