im looking into upgrading my rig to

CPU: switching an fx-6100 to an FX-8350
GPU: switching an AMD HD RADON 6950 to an AMD HD RADON 7970

currently i have 2 hard drives and an ssd but i cant imagine theyd use that much power (thats a question, am i right in that assumtion)

im also using a Asus M5A97 motherboard with 8 gb of ram, no plans of overclocking anything at this point

will my 650w power supply be able to handle this?

That would depend on the quality of the PSU. Whats the make and model?

100w to 125w TDP CPU
~125w to 250w (300w Ghz Edition) TDP GPU
Adding ~150 wattage.
375w +hdd, fans and cooling, peripherals...etc.
Going to guess ~500w usage w/ AiO watercooling and Backlit Keyboard.
It may support it, I believe you need 20amps @12v for the GPU.

But for the PSU to support it efficiently, I recommend it being a 80+ rated-Bronze or higher is a plus.

But if you are thinking of getting a PSU for ~70 dollars, but your current PSU has the requirements-you can put the money into a R9 290 (not 290x) for $400. :)
