Why does my Asus R9 280x look like an old 7970?

I was interested in getting the Asus R9 280x because of its performance and its cool looks. I bought it from memory express and I was expecting to get this and instead I get this. It is really disappointing as I really like how the first one looks like and I was wondering if it will be ok to return it back. Can someone please explain why did I get the second one? I checked all the reviews and they all had the first one. The first one has different fans and structure.
Here pictures of what I got Here

what does the computer recognize it as? the cooler might be a little different but the chip underneath is the same..
If the computer says its a 7970 and you paid for a 280X, than yes, return it. If it is recognized as a 280X then dont worry. Also to answer your question in the title, a Radeon r9 280X is a rebrand of the HD 7970. New name, same chip essentially. Not sure if there even is a difference outside of clock speeds (set by the manufacturers) and its ability to Xfire better than the 7XXX series (which may be on the driver end anyways.) It has been known for a while that the r9 series is a rebadged 7XXX series card.

if i'm not mistaken the 280X use slightly new chip that has been tweak for much better power consumption just like nvidia did with GK110B for GTX780 Ti. but other than that everything else was the same as older 7970. so far amd new crossfire tech only comes with the Hawaii chip.

so the 7XXX series cards and the r9 series cards crossfire the same? or is the r9 a little better, and hawaii fixes everything else?

I was under the impression that the 290X was the only one that would be different in the way you described..the ones before really are just rebadges :/

so far only 290X and 290 will have the new improvement.

Yea it appears that I have the Asus 280X V2 which is the second version. I heard that it has better cooling than the other one even though it looks like a 7970. I guess I will keep it.

essentially the 7970 and the 280x are identical cards, just slightly difference memory and gpu clock speeds. So really doesnt matter even if it was a 7970 your not really losing out on anything other than a name

welll...the ability to scale up to 4k resolutions...

what? all cards mentioned can do 4k.
