Currently have Motherboard P7P55-LX with ATI Radeon HD 1GB 5700 Series graphics card.
I would like to know if I can upgrade to a 2GB version given the motherboard installed.

It's more reasonable to buy a newer 2GB GPU.

Thankyou for that sir. Incidentally I do like your avatar of Capt. John Miller's shaky hand.

Yeah, it's one of my fav scenes.

On topic: what is your GPU budget? Post your CPU too.

I'll speak to my son tomorrow, unfortunately (for my pocket) he's at Uni in Nottingham so it may be Friday before I can get back to you.

CPU Intel Socket 1156 Core, i7 core i5 processors.
Budget would be negotiable with she who must be obeyed, so not fixed at this time.

PCU is 500W

I am sorry, but you still need to give me more details. I already saw that the motherboard supports only 1st gen. i5 and i7 CPUs, but there's quite a different between the lowest i5 and highest i7. I need to know which one you have. It'd be also good to know your PC RAM (how much memory) and more details about the PSU (which model), so I can provide you with best GPU options.

OK I'll try, but it's difficult with my Son being so far away and trying to communicate as and when he's available.

Current RAM is 4GB, just obtained 2 X 2GB cards to install increasing to 8GB RAM.
The CPU supports Intel turbo boost technology.
The GPU supports AMD Quad-GPU CrossfireX Technology.
I will try to get the PSU model by tonight.

I hope this helps......I am a complete technophobe, so sorry for that

Did you purchase that RAM by yourself? It's very important to buy the same model, otherwise you could have problems in performance.

Unfortunately the other information you gave me doesn't help me a lot. Do you have the PC at you, or is it at your son? If you have it, then do this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysZw2HK1DaQ

When on system (the first tab), post the processor info here, or you can do a screenshot.

PS: do you live in the UK?

Yes I live in Milton Keynes and my Son is in Nottingham where the PC is.
I bought the RAM 2x2GB DDR3 to match the installed RAM.
I'm finding it very difficult getting my Son on the phone (and he never reads his emails) so for the time being I think it best I postpone my enquiry until I can get up to see him and take the PC apart to get the info you request.
Many, many thanks for your help so far and I hope to converse with you again soon.

Okay, as soon as you get more details about the PC, post them here. I'll try to provide you with best GPU options.

Hi Foldalot, I believe I have solved the problem in Nvidia GT640 2gb DDR3. That solution avoids the need to upgrade the Power unit as well.
Many thanks for your input and have a very happy New Year!

There are better GPUs that could work well on that PSU, but if GT 640 fills your needs then I hope it'd do you alright.

Happy New Year.
