I have looked at a bunch of reviews and other threads trying to decide to go with windows 7 or windows 8.1. No one place can I find something that makes me totally confident in either choice over the other.

My potential setup: PC Part Picker Link

I plan to use the new desktop for gaming, video editing (sony vegas, or adobe), and programming java, C, C++... as I am currently attending university for a BS in software engineering.

My main concerns for win8 is compatability issues with my steam games and minecraft, especially the eclipse jdk I currently use for writing java code.

Main concerns for win7 is that it is a dying OS and that software update support will not be as good as win8.

I plan on maintaining this rig for 3-4 years while upgrading GPU, CPU, RAM and storage as needed.
I am really looking for as clear of a cut winner as I can here with my needs

I'd rather go for windows 7 for the following reasons:

Windows 7 is more stable than win8.
There have been some issues with the saves on games with windows 8 (One of the reasons i went back to windows 7)
Also for some software, it wont save your work the way it should (For example, i use Traktor Scratch pro for mixing and it didn't save my playlists, so it was basically useless on W8)
W7 is more user friendly in my opinion since you have a taskbar. (Which you can add in W8, but it's user made, with a nasty UI and some problems)

Had no problems coding in java and C# with W8 or W7. (Using Unity game engine, and NetBeans.)

Not sure about the part on video editing, but it could be troublesome if it had some of the same issues i had with Traktor Scratch pro.
I would go for windows 7 without thinking it after trying to get used to W8 for about 3 months.

Hope i have helped and good luck ^^
