More about max clock setting ram
  1. well they can go a bit higher depending on how good ur ram is, but 1600mhz seems good of an overclock
  2. Intel cpu chips have an excellent ram controller.
It keeps the cpu fed with dara from ram efficiently.
Faster ram speeds do not show up in real app performance(vs. synthetic benchmarks)

I would not bother overclocking the ram except for an academic exercise.
  3. oh ok ive seen ppl go higher but i didnt know how the over clocking process works i thought 1600 was low. so over clocking the ram is only good for benchmarks?? im better of over clocking my cpu to 4ghz then for more performance??
  4. ah ok so im basically in the sweet spot with having my ram clocked to 1600?? another thing is hes talking about sandy bridge is that the new gen cpus?? cuz my cpu is a first gen i7 idk what thats considered

Exactly. The cpu OC will be much more effective.

Actually, the most effective performance enhancer for an older pc is to use a ssd for the os and some apps. 120gb should do it.

so that post u linked is not relevant to my cpu?? i wa sthinking of getting one and installing my os and my main games on it and have the movies and music of a reg 7200 rpm drive i have a 1tb drive i was just saving for the ssd

The article is about as applicable to previous gen chips as well as newer haswell chips.
The performance differences are relatively minor over a full spectrum of apps.

By comparison, a windows install or update that takes an hour on a good hard drive will take 15 minutes on a ssd.
