Hi!

I've had a problem for a long time with my GTX 580 card.

Issue: When playing games, my screen turns black sceen, monitor blinks as if computer turned off, and hangs. I must restart computer manually. This is the most common issue, but sometimes the driver can recover (Windows says something like "Nvidia driver recovered...", and I'm back in game/windows.

Card: Gigabyte Geforce GTX 580 1536MB GDDR5, (795Mhz), 2xDVI, HDMI, HDTV, with Cuda, Windforce X3
Driver: 9.19.13.2049 (Date: 2013-06-21) (I tried a few more, but can't remember which ones, same problem).
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P67A-D3-B3 - LGA1155
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K, 3.3GHz, 6MB
PSU: Fractal Design Newton R2, 650W modular, 80 PLUS

It used to be only in games, but one time (in like a year (yes, I've had this problem for a year, getting a little fed up), but that one time was recently) it happened on the desktop. It seems that it happens more frequently in newer games. I can play QuakeLive and Heroes of Newerth (old games) without any problem (one time screen flickered black a little in quake). But if I play Battlefield 3 or something one can be sure it hangs within 30 minutes.

I noticed something strange: When I first got the card, I thought it was broken and sent it back to the retailer and got a new one. During that time I tried putting a 4 year old GeForce 8800 GTS in my new computer. That card has always worked flawlessly, and it had exactly the same problem, although it now had a new driver that I had not used before (when it worked flawlessly). I thought that it must be the driver or my motherboard. But my motherboard seems to work just fine for everything but this, and it's just a some games. Also, I have a friend who bought the exact same components I did, and he has the same problem. So it's unlikely that my components are just damaged.

The new GTX 580 that I got from the retailer had the same problem (so all my 3 cards had the same problem, 2 GTX 580 and 1 GTS 8800).

I tried many different settings in MSI Afterburner: Changing voltage, fan speed, etc. Changing voltage made no difference, but setting the fan speed to high seemed to work. The thing is that it's awfully loud, and the temperature did not seem that high anyway, around 60-80 degrees C if I remember correctly. Also, it might just be coincidence that it worked during the short period (1 hour or so) that I had the fan speed set to high).

You have any ideas? Also, two questions: What decides if the card is too hot? Where is there a thermometer, and what software/firmware decides what is too hot? Also, is there a program that I can use to set the fan speed a little bit higher, but not fix it at a certain speed? The fan is supposed to speed up when the card is hot, right? But I want to set it just a little bit higher compared to what it is set to now, but still have it scale up with the temperature.

I'm not an expert in this, but a card with 3 fans? like yours shouldn't reach those temperatures.. I've had problems with my GTS250, blue screens, not loading windows, game crashes, driver failures and recoveries for like 3 years. It died 4 days ago and now it works only in safe mode.. xD
Ummm, you said you got 2 different cards, and both had the same problem? Looks to me the problem is not in your gpu..

Yes well maybe not. But the computer works fine for everything but demanding games. Maybe the motherboard somehow doesn't like the card. Remember that my friend with the exact same components has the same problem.

By the way, are there any difference between the slots here? http://www.fractal-design.com/media/344d9f8f-334c-4ab2-... Maybe I connected my power cables wrong.

Those slots should be all the same. You can try what kristianAA advised you, some of the new drivers sometimes cause troubles.

Uninstall newest drivers and install older ones

Is this a known issue? How far back should I go?

Yes, the drivers can be broken..

Means you can try to clock it in the MSI afterburner and see if it still crashes.

What? Sorry, but I don't get what you mean by "Means you can try to clock it in the MSI afterburner and see if it still crashes.".

I downloaded MSI Afterburner and Kombustor. Tried burn-in test, and it says "GPU throttling -597" (max is 795 otherwise). Is this significant somehow? Does it mean the clock is set too high or the voltage too low?

I think it means the GPU's temperature is too high and it's clocking itself down to prevent further temperature rising..

But it starts throttling when the temperature goes over 60 degrees and the fan speed it at 47%.

No idea, sorry.. I hope someone with more experience with cards can answer this :/
