Hello to everyone! Going to build new PC and now I'm seeking for appropriate CPU for my needs. I do a lot of python programming and dealing with virtual machines. Also it would be great to play some heavy game another day =)

So my question is as title said which processor is more considerable for buying?

Hi there,

As the others have said, that FX is just an overclocked 8350 (which is basically an overclocked 8320) so it's a bit of a waste of money.

Since you're looking to do gaming at some point, which graphics card were you looking at?

And I agree, the i7 4770k is probably one of the best around and would beat out that FX 9370 pretty handily.

Thank all for quick answers) Definitely drop fx-9370 from my list. But also I have some limitations in my budget so can't afford i7 4770k and decided to consider its little brother core i5 4670 thus would be appreciated to hear some feedback about this model too. But one small detail I also want to know: what do you think about amd FX-9590, it is worth to pick up one or core i7 4770 would be better choice?

Since you're looking to do gaming at some point, which graphics card were you looking at?

Haven't decided yet. Want to choose CPU at first.

all the FX 9000 series chips are just overclocked FX 8000 series chips, the FX 9590 is no exception. In fact, I've heard that you have to run quality cooling to be able to run that chip at all because the overclock is so high, definitely not worth it, might as well just get an FX 8350/20 and overclock it yourself. The i7 is still a much better buy

the i5 4670 is nice, it has strong IPC and is a good processor overall, the main difference between the i7 4770 and the i5 4670 is hyperthreading, which can help in CPU heavy applications such as video rendering and multiplayer gaming.

That depends on your budget, if you want to get the i7 and combine it with r9-280x or gtx 770, and stop it there, if you want to get the i7 and combine it with gtx 780, gtx 780ti, r9-290 or r9-290x then here we go but don't waste your money on the CPU and then consider yourself a budget for the GPU look at my experience here, I went with fx 8350+r9-290 my uncle went with i7-4770k and r9-280x the same day
some of our benchmarks here at 1080p
Metro last Light very high
fx 8350+r9-290= 68.5 fps
i7 4770k+ 280x= 51.8 fps
Bioshock Infinite ultra quality+ DDoF
fx 8350+r9-290= 91.6
i7 4770k+ 280x= 71.4
Battlefield 3 ultra quality+ 4xmsaa
fx 8350+r9-290= 87.4
i7 4770k+ 280x= 71.3
crysis 3 high+fxaa
fx 8350+r9-290= 78.4
i7 4770k+ 280x= 58.6
Bioshock Infinite ultra quality+DDoF
fx 8350+r9-290=91
i7 4770k+ 280x=73
Hitman Absoloution
fx 8350+r9-290=79.8
i7 4770k+ 280x=76.2
Grid 2 Maximum quality+ 4xmsaa
fx 8350+r9-290= 106.6
i7-4770k+280x= 91.7
So don't commit suicide, set your budget first, if no budget then the i7 and r9-290x or gtx 780ti

That is just the gaming side of things and everything is more than playable both setups. It is no news that a stronger GPU performs better in gaming so try sticking the 290 in your uncles machine and the 280X in yours and compare again. CPU's are good at other things like OP specs in his uses! For gaming I5 4670 would be my choice.

Just get a i7-4770k .. The Fx-9590 takes as much as 220w of power and you need to get a decent aftermarket cooler to keep it cool and only 3-4 Mobo's are supported by that processor (min cosr of mobo - $200).. Also in the end the i7 is still giving better performance than AMD in gaming at least !

Alright, I guess it's more important for your uses. If it was a purely gaming rig then its best to work around an initial graphics card selection IMO.

Out of the 2 you said, the 4770 would be better. Essentially, anything up from FX 8350 (actually FX 8320 IMO) loses its price/performance and the intel wins out from there on. So under $200/£150 in my opinion is AMD territory, and above is intel. Once again, just my opinion before anyone goes nuts at me.

The intels have less cores, but they are much stronger. The FX has more cores but they're weaker. Either are perfectly capable for gaming, I guess it depends on how many cores these programs you use utilise, how much processing power they need, and how much you want to spend. But yes, the i7 4770 beats the nuts off the FX 9590.

The i5 4670 is essentially the i7 4770 without hyperthreading. For your needs, I'm guessing the i7 would be better. And the only difference between the 4770 and the 4770k is that the k version is unlocked and you're able to overclock it.

The reason why I compared these two rigs is that, they both cost they same I wanted to warn him about not wasting his money, my uncle listened to the same you, and made that crazy mistake, about the second time I am really sorry to disagree with about the i5, games are getting heavily threaded, i5 will be a bottleneck before too long, well I don't have googd news for i5 owners, first Ubisoft that has confirmed, i5s wont be able to play watch dogs ultra in watch dogs http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=4546&game=Watch%20Dogs the engine which will be used in all ubi games in the future and then its about Capcoms new engine which is heavily threaded, see what Capcom says about its new engine http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/132533/sponsored_feature_resident_evil_5_.php?print=1 resident evil 5 will be the first game on this engine and finally about Unreal engine 4 which is said to benefit multi core, hyper-threading to its full potential which means i7 or fx 8 cores will dominate the tests as in crysis 3 http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Crysis-3-PC-235317/Tests/Crysis-3-Test-CPU-Benchmark-1056578/

I have compared both i7-4770k and fx 8350 in terms of video editing and rendering, the i7 was barely any faster than fx 8350, it is not worth the extra money, if he is not gaming, i5-4670k is a way behind these two and also, the OP might like to read this http://www.shacknews.com/article/70348/epic-talks-unreal-engine-4

Ok, guys, may I specify my needs more concretely? I'm going to deal with running virtual machines (often nested) on linux operating system using kvm module. It is not for heavy production but rather for development tasks. For example one of use cases is up to 10 running VM's some of which have nested VM's inside of them. Also in my free time I would like to play another heavy game that came up recently but most of the time it is developing and working with virtualization as I said above.

In this case grab the I7, hand down i7 is better for virtualization, Intel supports SLAT wihich is vital for good virtualization and the usage of Hyper-V. SLAT allows you to make your virtual machines much more flexible and it brings them closer to actual real hardware...

So, I've decided to go with 1230-v3 (or even 1240-v3 if I'll manage to purchase it from my local resellers). But next come extra questions =). Which motherboard under 200$ will be most suitable for this CPU. And should I bother about extra specs of that processor such as ECC memory supporting, Fast memory access and Flex memory access that are extra in comparison with core i7/i5.

Also don't forget I'm building home workstation not server one =)

The last question is: should I close this thread and create another one for motherboards realm or it is ok to continue further with this topic?

Many thanks for your answers and your time)

I think server mobo is not good solution for home workstation build because of my budget thus I think that I can sacrifice ECC feature and move to more desktop solutions. So could somebody suggest some motherboard for 1230-v3 under 150$. So far from many another threads GA-Z87X-D3H from gigabyte is often recommended. So what can you say about this mobo and its alternatives.
