Built-in webcam no longer functioning

My mother's Acer laptop has a webcam which is no longer working for some reason. She uses the laptop to Skype me occasionally (among other things) and the camera doesn't come on any more when we start our call. She also got a message about a USB issue when I connected to her with Skype today. I've never tried to troubleshoot a built-in webcam before and don't know how to get started. We have the latest version of Skype and Skype doesn't see any webcam on the computer.

I see an "unknown device" in the list of USB items in Device Manager. (She is running Windows 7). I searched for an update to the drivers on that device but it came back with a message that these are already the best drivers. What else can I do to make the laptop use the webcam?

For what it's worth, I don't think the laptop has even been out of the house in many months so I'm not sure what would cause it to fail. The laptop is not quite two years old and has been gently used; I doubt it's been out of the house in many months.

I tried using the "Update Drivers" option in Device Manager and it came back and said it already had the best drivers. I'm not sure how it could determine that since Windows itself doesn't seem to know what device it is. (Windows just sees it as an "unknown device" and doesn't identify any manufacturer or model.) I've removed the driver altogether and will try to install the latest driver, once I figure out what webcam she has.

How can I determine what webcam my mother has on her laptop? Is there any way to figure it out from Windows itself or do I need to determine the exact laptop model and then get Acer to tell us what webcam it put in her computer?
