Hello i am here today to ask for your help,
today while in college my Toshiba 500gb External hard drive gave up on me. I have been looking at ways to try recover the files i had on the hard drive as they are pretty essential. When i go into Device manager or devices and printers i can see the hard drive sitting there although i am unable to access the files on the Hard drive (see the pic attached) http://gyazo.com/46b8179cd75efdedb7c1f01b068eab8e

As you can see they are there and recognised, now the problem arises where i trawled through forums and they told me to do these following steps :
Go into Device Manager.
Right-click the external drive & choose "Properties".
Click the "Driver" tab.
Click the "Uninstall" button.

Unplug the drive from USB port.
Restart Windows.
When Windows has fully loaded, plug the drive back in.

Now as i can see my External Hard drive is there but "not intialized" (see pic) >>> http://gyazo.com/ff6c9379411ab5678bf2b33d756fb6f8

I then right click it and try to "initialize it" (see pic) >>> http://gyazo.com/278b9437c9422b3eae61346117633c25

The problem then arises when i get the following error (see pic) >>> http://gyazo.com/dfc5785ecca7b8146e39905c2e96076c

I am stumped from here on what to do, any help in allowing me to be able to just access the files and be able to copy them to my computer or in the best case scenario me being able to keep and use my External hard drive would be HUGELY appreciated

Thanks in advance,
Jason

Well, it's a good thing you didn't succeed in initializing it. Like formatting, that will just make the data harder to recover.

So you've got two problems, one of which is that the device has come up write-protected. Have you read our general suggestions on the topic: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html ?

Another possibility is that the problem is with the enclosure, not the drive. One thing that people try frequently is to remove the hard drive from the case and attach it directly to the motherboard ports - if you are comfortable with the hardware and if you have a tower system to install the drive into.

Good luck. Keep us posted on what you try.
