Hi, I have an old 160GB External HDD by Seagate with a push in/out power switch.

Each time I plug in the hard drive to my computer and connect the power to a socket and turn it on, I can hear the drive spin noise through the speakers. This has only started happening around this year (but I used this drive in the past very scarcely, and now it's my time machine backup).

My first guess is a grounding issue, but I don't know how I'd fix it. Also, is it still safe to use if it is a problem with grounding?

Thanks.

I have had the issues just start today and I can't find anyone else who has answers. Did you have any luck with this?

I was researching this subject because my brother was having this issue, too. It's probably not the HDD, but rather the power supply noise when under (slightly) more load (reading HDD, for example). We found a solution on another forum: someone said they removed ground from their speakers, and it fixed it. Try a different set of speakers (nothing fancy), and see what happens. I will likely not be returning to this forum, but I hope I helped you.
