I asked someone to pick one up for me today at officemax but they were $60. They weren't for blu-ray either. I just finished my build minus an optical drive because mine uses what I believe is called PATA and my motherboard only supports SATA. I need a drive that'll both read and burn cd/dvd. New egg has cd/dvd drives and cd/dvd burners.

1) Do I need both or will the burner also read and install my discs such as windows 7?

2) I was looking at one of the drives on newegg and it said compatible with Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Is this a tyo or are do I need to buy a Windows 7 compatible drive?

Hi

Most people would by a multifunction SATA DVD drive that can read CD & DVD and write to:-
CD-R /CD-RW
DVD-R, DVD-RW
DVD+R, DVD+RW
(some also do DVD RAM)

drives without the writing option are hard to find nowdays as the standard version is so cheap
again ATA (IDE) interface drives are rare nowdays.
If you are doing a lot of disk duplication then having 2 DVD drives may be useful

They are all compatible with XP through to 8.1 & Linux (recent)
( 2000 may have problems with SATA unless you can find drivers for the SATA controller)

With 2000 & XP you need a program to write to DVD's
Windows Vista onwards can write to DVD's
