I'm upgrading my 7770, and going for either a 7970/280x or a GTX 770. I play Physx enabled games like Hawken and Planetside2, so would perfer the GTX 770. Not planning on jumping on the 4k bandwagon anytime soon, as 1080p offers me all I need on a single monitor. I want a card that I can keep for at least 2 years. Reason I'm saying this is because of the constant debate between VRAM and 1080p. I'm not willing to currently spend the extra money for a 4GB GTX 770, and would rather pay less for the 7970/280x. So here are my questions:

1. Will 2GB VRAM possibly be enough for 1080p gaming for the next 2 years?

2. Since a GPU shares system memory, can I get the GTX 770 and will it use the extra RAM just like it'd use it's VRAM in case it needs it?

Solution
I would opt for r9 280x bec, ause it's never than 7970. Few new technologyes like mantle and a lot versions (I mean makes of R9 280x like: MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS, XFX, etc.) make it better than 7970 altough they are allmost same. I would go with 3gb card. It will surely be enough for around 4 years. If you can get only 2gb, than yes, it will be enough I think. And as for RAM use dedicated graphics cards use only VRAM and integrated GPUs use system RAM which is then called "shared memory". Hope this helps!
