Fresh perspective on upgrade needed

I need some advice from a different perspective. I was dead set on an idea, now I think I’m having second thoughts or I’m just plain wrong.

The build in my sig is a machine I’ve been putting together for a couple of months, building from a combination of used and new parts. Now I’ve hit an issue that’s made me rethink. Basically the i5-2500k that I had purchased second hand has turned out to be knackered (got my money back) and looking at my options again I think I’ve gone the wrong way with the build.
So my budget is approx. £150 which I could push up a bit but not too much. I have the following components:

Motherboard - Asus p8z68v-le
RAM - 8gb 1600mhz Crucial Ballistix cas8

Everything else doesn’t really matter, I’m basically having major CPU second thoughts. I’m willing to buy new or second hand, I’m also willing to sell the RAM and or motherboard on eBay and start again. With my limited budget I want to do the following things beyond standard everyday tasks - Heavy games use and ripping / compressing DVD and Blu-Ray for my XBMC box. The next caveat is that I don’t have any interest in overclocking anything, I want the machine to be quiet and also I only want to use one GPU, no interest in SLI / Crossfire either.

So, the way I see it is my options are:

Go new and buy AMD FX. Sell the motherboard and hope to add £40 - £50 to my budget. My two concerns here are a) Is the 1600mhz RAM suitable or would the AMD benefit / need 1866mhz? b) Are the stock coolers awful on the AMD’s and will I need an aftermarket one to keep it quiet?

Keep the RAM and the board and buy a second hand Intel i7 Sandy Bridge / Ivy Bridge (or is the board wrong??)

Keep the RAM but buy an 1150 socket board (probably H87 chipset) and buy something like an I5-4570.

What are your thoughts and opinions on my wall of text above, just spewing my mind on to this forum at like midnight so I apologise in advance!

Sorry, sometimes hard to get out of my own mind-set, and you're right in that there are cheaper options if not wanting to overclock. I do think that a CPU is all that's needed here though

Thanks Friedman, my only issue with that idea is that at £177 that makes the 2500k an expensive option. Bear in mind I don't want to overlock, I could have a Haswell for less than that, sell the board and buy a H87 and probably have spent the same amount.

Thanks Friedman I think you are correct, after much deliberation I decided changing to AMD would have meant changing the RAM. I know it is not necessary but I am anal with things like that. I've bought a second hand i7-2600 off eBay for £133 which is a bargain if it works perfect when I get it. I decided not to get a i7-2600k because buying second hand you don't know how well it's been overclocked so you could be buying a heap of trouble.
