Here we go again, a learner’s Q & A

Since I have access to very reasonably priced (cheap) 160GB or larger HDD, 4 x 2GB of RAM and Windows 7 (32 or 64 Bit) and…
Solely for the purpose of learning and upgrading from XP to W 7 I have some basic questions based on my existing components.

Can I...
1- Straight swap the 80GB HDD for a like 160GB or larger?
2- Upgrade RAM to at least 8GB (4 X 2GB)?
3- Make use of the 64 Bit windows 7?

Here is what I have now::

Motherboard
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5LD2VM/

HDD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

http://www.pugetsystems.com/parts/Hard-Drive/Seagate-Ba...

RAM
http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=P5LD2...

Note, the Crucial scan says max RAM is 4GB. Can I assume that is only because I’m currently running XP?

I’m not interested in a SSD or external HDD at this time; just the above basics, for now.

Thanks.

Wow...

160 GB of storage ? That's really little. At least get 500GB.

Your motherboard can only support up to 4GB of RAM so 8GB won't be possible. But you can swap your Hard Drive.

The Windows 7 64 bit version would really help. Some games and applications don't support 32 bit anymore. I had a friend who was using the Windows 7 32 bit and he couldn't run CODG

Holy iron-batman!
Were you just sitting there waiting for me to pop up?
And the Windows 7, 64 bit, can that happen or should I stick to 32 bit?
Also, I guess your answer prompts the question, is there a simple fix so the MB can support more RAM?

Thanks a bunch for the quick reply.

The only way is to get a new motherboard. Windows 7 64 bit will definitely be worth it.

Sorry, thought I was done.
Would this guy work as a direct replacement?

I think Western Digital's Hard Drives are better. WD Caviar Blue would be great.

The reason I asked about that specific one is because there is a BNIB one locally for 50 bucks. :)
