i am currently using a gtx 780 with a ati 7770 next to it, the gtx is used for gaming and the ati for when im multitasking with course work. i have 3 vga monitors hooked up over various adaptors for both cards and although the screens are different sizes they all happily push out a resolution of 1600x1080 and run at 60mhz. i had a go with a 3 screen hdmi setup with 23 inch screens at 120mhz which ran at 1920x1080 and i honestly can not see the difference between a 3 way hdmi setup and 3 way vga setup.
so my question is it really worth my time to go out and buy 3 hdmi screens and get new adaptors where needed or should i just stay where i am.

If you are happy with what you already have then you may as well stick to what you have. That's how I decide 95% of my upgrades.

Some people are more picky than others and some LCDs' VGA inputs are worse than others or might have some compatibility issues with the timings of certain GPUs' VGA output.

With analog signals, you can have jitter, color shift/blur from phase error between color signals and pixel sync, position error again due to incorrect pixel sync and a bunch of other things that can go wrong if the VGA decoding on the LCD is less than perfect or getting confused by slightly unexpected timing parameters from the GPU. Most of these issues do not exist with digital interfaces... it either works or not with a (usually) very sharp transition between the two states.

If you have no visible artifacts from the double conversion (or at least nothing you would consider annoying) then there is no problem for you.
