Hi,

New rig builder here in need of some help. For the past few days my new rig had been working fine but yesterday suddenly the entire rig shut off and wont turn back on. In order to isolate the problem I went back into the case to figure out if there had been any cables that had came out

None of that.

I had been monitoring the cpu temps and it reached a max of 38 degrees celcius so I dont think its an overheating problem

To this end, I thought it was a psu problem because it was a tier 5 brand as labled by eggxpert and only supplied 430w. I then got a corsair cx600M which was a tier 3 and suited my needs nevertheless. The board still wont turn on.

Now to further isolate the issue I plugged in the 24 pin by itself - the motherboard led and my hyper 212 fan turn on. Connecting everything else during this time turns everything on.

However, as soon as I try to connect my 8 pin cpu power, it shuts off. And im confused as to whether this is a motherboard or a cpu issue. Im hoping motherboard but I really need some help cause its bothering me. Thanks!

Currently my specs are:

- AMD FX 8320 processor w/hyper 212 aftermarket fan
- MSI 970a-g46 motherboard
- 8gb RAM
- Radeon amd 7750 HD GPU
- Western Digital 500GB HDD 7200 RPM

Honestly Ive been looking at the reviews on that board and they didnt recommend to put in an 8 core processor (at least some ppl on this forums didnt), but when I was buying it at microcenter as a bundle, the man assured me it would work. I knew there was a reason I wanted a quad instead of an 8 core!

its too late now to buy a new moboard so ill probably get it tomorrow. Any recommendations for that processor?

Interesting.. so then that leads me back to the origjnal question. Is the VRM failure related to the cpu not being able to power up? Im guessing I just got a defective board in that case, but j only spent 40 bucks on it so im not too angry.

The VRM's control the power for the CPU, basically are transformers. The more power they have to handle the warmer they get and it looks like MSI did not use good quality ones on their 970 boards. The CPU can be nice and cool but the VRM's get hot and stop working, if they fail the CPU will not work.
It is possible that your board was flawed and it should be in warranty so RMA it should handle the CPU not OC.
