Which memory to use with my Z87 + core i7-4770k? (1866 1.5V vs. 2133 1.6-1.65V)

Build specifics: AZRock Extreme4 Z87, i7-4770k. GTX780 if it matters.

I have 4x4gb each of the following memory sticks available - I'll be keeping one set and returning the other. Prices were nearly identical so that doesn't factor in.

  • * G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) / 9-10-9-28 / 1.5V
    * G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) / 9-11-11-31 / 1.6-1.65V

I know Intel wants no more than 1.5V (+/-5%) for JDEC profiles, but certifies a number of 1.65V for XMP profiles with Haswell. I couldn't find that specific memory listed on Intel's "approved" list[1] but there are certainly plenty there.

Will I see any noticeable performance bump from the 2133 memory running at 1.6-1.65V vs the 1866 at the "safer" 1.5v? Or should I stick with the 1866 and enjoy? FWIW, I don't plan on going for a massive overclock on my processor, probably only 4.1-4.3ghz depending on silicone lottery - going for a very stable build rather than pushing the limits. Oh, and I'm a noob when it comes to RAM overclocking.

Normal procedure is not to overclock the RAM at all. If you want RAM faster than DDR3 2133 then buy it. Too much system instability risk for minimal gain to try and sqeeze a few percent out of the RAM you have. It's just not necessary anymore.

Sorry, wrong terminology - I meant, don't enable the XMP profile until after the processor overclock? Or does it not matter?
