I am planning on upgrading my computer soon, and was wondering if setting up a crossfire with 2 Asus Radeon HD 7870's is better than just upgrading to a more powerful card. Also what are the pros and cons to a crossfire set-up?

Multicard configuration is troublesome..
High power requirement, microstuttering, excessive heat is a common issue for any multicard configuration..
Don't forget, crossfire/sli need a strong cpu..if you only have a moderate cpu horse power, than it cannot extract all of performance..

but the pros is, you'll gain significant performance boost, (around 80%+ than same single card setup) in many games (which is support cf/sli) with lesser money..

if you have a enough power supply, (very) good airflow in your case, and you have a good processor, then crossfire is way to go..
if it's not, single stronger card is the option..

Funny that you said you wanted to switch to Nvidia because I just did that. I thought my 7870 was giving me stutter problems in games like Crysis 2. So I returned it and picked up a GTX 760. So far Nvidia has been a much better experience but I still stutter horribly in-game. I did countless hours of troubleshooting and driver uninstall/reinstall, and still no fix. I will most likely start a different thread addressing that.

After doing some research and peoples views I think i am going to go with the GTX 770 due to price and performance.

Strange that you have had issues with Nvidia cards. Can i ask what the card manufacturer is? All my friends are with nvidia cards and they always seem much better than the AMD equlivents
