I'm building a rig with the following components:

Graphics cards:
3 x Radeon R9 290

CPU:
AMD SDX145HBGMBOX Sempron 145 Single-Core (2.80 GHz, 1MB Cache, Socket AM3, 45W)

Motherboard:
Gigabyte Ultra Durable 3 GA-990FXA-UD5 Mobo - AMD 990FX

RAM:
Corsair CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333 Mhz

PSU:
EVGA Supernova 1300W Modular Gold PC Power Supply

SSD:
ADATA ASP600S3-32GM-C Premier Pro SP600 (32GB)

The only other components will be a keyboard, mouse and monitor.

I was going to run 4 x 7950's on this system but switched to 3 x R9 290's due to availability issues. The 7950's generally pull around 260W each whereas the R9 290's pull 300W each which leaves me wondering about the PSU. :-/

Do you guys think the above PSU would be adequate for this system or will I have to add a separate 750W PSU? If so, how safe is connecting 2 PSU's to power separate parts of the system?

Well I couldn't find power requirments for the R9-290 but I could for the R9-290X which is probably more power hungry, specs are as follows:
600W minimum
33Amps on 12V+ Rail.

so times that by 3 and you have yourself at
1800W Minimum
99Amps on the 12V+ Rail.

Seeing as how you have a very well built PSU You should be around fine. That 1800W Minimum is the reference requirment putting a precaution as to why the wattage requirment is so high. I could be wrong though but judging from what I can see you should be fine

Thanks for the swift response BlankInsanity. Just for argument's sake if it were you putting this together, would you consider adding another PSU just to be on the safe side? The cost of an additional 750W PSU isn't an issue if it means eliminating any potential issues.

First thing I would do is pick a much better CPU. A Sempron is on the very very low end as far as CPU's and single core at that. You would be very much CPU bottlenecked with even one of those cards.

Hmm, the Sempron is already on the way from Amazon but as it was pretty low-cost it's not much of an issue. Would you have any recommendations?

EDIT - I forgot to mention that this is for a Litecoin mining rig so the CPU shouldn't be hugely important. Probably should have mentioned that at the outset, sorry!

Sorry for the late reply, I sent the previous message before I went to school and I just got back anyway.

Honestly I probably would use the EVGA 1300 to power your GPUs and the 750W PSU to power the rest of your build. Though this is what I would do though never having crossfired/SLI before because I like to buy the best card I can get though seeing as how your crossfiring 3 R9 290s theres no better single card than that.

I would also just trying the 1300W PSU alone and see how it works it should get by, by my standards and if you happen to get micro-stuttering etc. just go to the 2 PSU plan.

Remember though the EVGA 1300W PSU is a pretty solid PSU, gold plus and modular! means its pretty well built and I believe it should hold up to your build

P.S about that CPU of yours.. I mean idk much about lite coining but for such an intense rig your gonna want a decent CPU. Your ordering a single core 2.3Ghz to work with 3 R9 290s? not to mention it's AMD. AMD CPUs are cheap for a reason. get a core i5 atleast. They're alot better in power efficiency and performance. Who knows maybe you'll see an increase in coining with core i5

the recommended power supply and the actual power used on a graphics card is NOT the same thing. R9 290x cards take about 300w each, so if you have a high quality power supply like a corsair ax1200i you'll be just fine with the rest of your setup..

in fact i'm running the same setup except i have a 64 GB graphics card and the athlon II processor with a sabertooth fx990 mobo..i'm using the ax1200i to run everything..

as far as your cpu goes..it's fine..mining is not cpu heavy..the graphics cards do all the work..the cpu is only needed to run windows and your mining software..or if you're using Linux

Shouldn't really open up old posts, however still a good point
