Why is this happening!

I recently formatted and reinstalled my os, Win7 64 bit. The first time I did it, youtube videos started to become very jerky after a while, it was ok at the start but then they would stutter every 10 seconds or so consistently. A mini second pause to describe it better.

This only began after a while. I was just after formatting and figured it was some sort of driver/flash thing I must have altered in some way, so I jut reformatted again. Now the problem seemed to be gone, except I noticed that although it doesn't stutter every 10 seconds, it just very infrequently stutters sometimes, just for a split second like a frame drop or something. I have witnessed this only on Youtube so far, but can't say that it is only present on this website as it happens so rarely. I also for some reason didn't check other video sites the first time.

I want to know what is causing this! Im worried it's hardware related.

First of all, don't panic; it's likely that this is a software-related problem. It's absolutely normal in recently built, formatted and/or reinstalled OSs.
Systems WILL perform poorly initially because of caching processes and many hardware-related installs such as drivers being in need to be updated.

I'll list some steps to fix this.

1. Start this process with a clean restart so that all services and processes are started up properly. Give the system a couple minutes to load up fully.
2. Check the services and programs that are starting up with your PC. Disable the ones you think are useless.
3. Update your drivers! Just installed OSs need lots of updating or your system will perform poorly!
4. Check for malware!
5. Use CCleaner or some other registry cleaner to fix errors.
6. Check for Windows Updates!
7. Consider running a full hardware check to make sure it's a software-related problem.


If none of the solutions above work please do the following:

1. Post your PC's specifications, hardware and software related here @ tomshardware.com
2. Contact your PC's provider if it isn't home-built.
3. Contact your local PC expert for further trouble-shooting.

I've reformatted a few times in the past and haven't noticed any issues, I followed the exact same process as the other times. All driver and updates were installed both times, no malware and used ccleaner. I have a high end gaming pc.

Not sure which services I should disable if I'm to attempt that. And It is exclusively a browser problem as all my games ect run perfect btw.

Does anyone else experience occasional stutters while watching videos ect? Even when its buffered? It may be just a normal thing that sometimes happens but I am scrutinizing the performance now as a result of the fist install.

How would I go about doing a full hardware check?

Have you checked your graphic card's software? Check your power settings and set them to max.
Make sure your hardware is not getting overheated, check fan speeds and cpu/gfx temperatures.

As for the full hardware check - if you've tested and are sure all solutions listed above don't work - do the following:

1. Close all programs and turn off the screen saver. Most of the tests take only a few minutes to complete, however, some tests may take longer and use a lot of system resources. Turn off non-essential applications to help the tests run more efficiently.

2. Go to: Start > All Programs > PC Help & Tools > open "Hardware Diagnostic Tools."
If you are prompted for an Administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
A window opens and displays a message to close all applications. Close all non-essential applications and click OK to continue. The program will now start collecting information and creating a report for you benefit.

3. Check the alerts! Hardware Diagnostic Tools scans the computer for any disabled or misconfigured devices. Detected issues are displayed in the Alerts section at the top of the main page. Always check the Alerts first, the computer issue may be related to an alert.

From there on you should know what you are supposed to do. Simply run tests on misconfigured devices (if you have any.)

Now, if you don't it's not 100% sure that the problem is not hardware related. Run tests on all devices to make SURE that they're ALL in healthy conditions.

Do a windows explorer search for Hardware and check the results, if it's not there I'd suggest you use Google.

Are you 100% it's still not software-related. Try running the programs (your browser if I'm not mistaken) in compatibility mode for older Windows versions and check if the problem is fixed.
Do so by simply right-clicking on the program.exe > Compatibility tab > Run this program in compatibility mode for: ***
Have you tried using a different browser?

No I'd say it probably is software related as I don't have any issues except when browsing... It happens in Firefox too. It's just a very quick pause that only happens once in a while, but I'm fairly certain it didn't happen before. And I had those much worse problems the first time reformatting which seems linked so I'm concerned.

Follow the steps I suggested above if you haven't yet. Use Google Chrome or Opera. Check your graphics card's software.
How much ram do you have installed?
