Recently my computer started displaying just a black screen randomly and the gpu fans would go to 100% this would sometimes happen as soon as the PC started after the beep or just after half an hour or sometimes not at all, however soon it started doing it as soon as it was turned on and/or the beep would be 1 long and 2 short beeps so I thought my GPU was broken and so I borrowed a radeon hd 6770 from my friend (my GPU is a radeon hd 6870) and his GPU works perfectly on my pc so I was certain my GPU was broken until he borrowed mine just to be sure and it worked perfectly on his pc and I have no idea what is wrong or what to do since the 6870 does this problem as soon as the pc is turned on but the 6770 works like a charm for hours on end. my computer is about 1 year and 3 months old which I built myself if that means anything
My pc:
gigabyte ga-970a-ds3 motherboard
msi radeon hd 6870 OC edition
amd phenom ii x4 965 black edition
3 x corsair vengence 4GB (1600)
Corsair cx600w psu
1 x pci wlan card
1 x cd/dvd rw drive
1 x 2tb seagate hard drive (7200 rpm I think)
4 x 120mm fans

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Try to borrow a known good working PSU from someone and test your original card with it. See what happens.

1 long and 2 short beeps is the beep code for a Video adapter error.

If the graphics card isn't fully seated in the PCI Express x16 slot it can also cause that beep code.

Sometimes is does the beep code, sometimes not but the gpu always displays nothing and fans are at 100%

Does same problem with my cousin's 750w psu he said it is probably the card, yet it worked on my friends pc for an hour and then continued to work after shutting down and restarting, what do you think?

Did you try removing and reseating the gpu in your system? Have you tried moving the card to a different slot ?

If you are sure that the card is not faulty, then it could be the PSU or MB of yours playing tricks with you. And let me tell you Corsair CX series is not that good, so if you can manage another brand of PSU from someone, then test with that PSU and your own GPU in your system. See what happens.

Yeah I already know that you tested with another 750W PSU, and I assumed that was a CX PSU aswell, so I asked you to get another brand of PSU, just to make sure which component is the real culprit.

And now it looks like both GPU and PSU has something to do with your problem. Else 6770 wouldn't work in your system.

Radeon HD 6870 - 28A and a 500W PSU minimum

Radeon HD 6770 - 25A and a 450W PSU minimum

If it was anything other than a Gigabyte mobo I would be baffled but if you go read reviews on most of their products including this one over the past 2 years you'll find ALOT of very negative comments about boards being DOA upon arrival, going DOA just weeks after purchase and tons of other crazy stuff. Only thing I can suggest that hasn't been mentioned yet is trying to update the bios to the newest revision available if you have yet to try that. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
