Lately I've been trying to update to Windows 8.1 but every time my computer restarts the monitors don't detect a signal, but I'm certain that the computer is on. I tried re-plugging the monitors but they still don't detect a signal.
He's suggesting that when you're running the install, rather than outputting video to your graphics card, it's outputting it to your integrated graphics on your motherboard.

Oh. That could possibly be the answer. I haven't tried plugging my monitor into the default slot. If that is the case does that mean there is something wrong with my graphics card/computer?

Nah. The default on most motherboards is to use integrated graphics as primary. Once the OS is installed, Windows outputs video like you're used to. There should be a setting in the BIOS/UEFI to specify which you want to be primary. You can hop in there and choose your PCI-E solution. That should solve that problem.

Turns out that wasn't the problem. Still had the black screen on the default graphics.
Before you tried installing 8.1 could you see a BIOS screen on startup during a normal boot?
when I start it up regularly on Windows 8 the only thing that comes up is the lock screen where you enter your password. It starts up fairly fast, usually under 10 seconds.
what your system spec??? have you check to see if there any bios updates for your mb that your missing??? before you did the update did you update all your drivers???
