Is it okay to not screw in psu and just let it rest on the on top of the motherboard?

Please don't think I'm stupid for asking this but I am putting my computer together tonight and I just need this to work for 2 weeks

Does it HAVE to be screwed into the case? Assuming I am not going to not going to move it around.

The PSU will line up with the the vent (air holes in the case where the plug socket is located) about half way andif tthat's the problem will it work if I just leave the case open?

Hi - agree with sourodip, the risk of shorting something on the mobo is to gr8. Since screwing it in takes only a couple min, I wouldn't risk a potential short (or worse)

the case may not be well grounded if it's not in right but othere then that it's not a big deal as long as you don't move it around (aka to dis-charge you need to tuch the PSU first for safety)
