I had a power surge which ended toasting a motherboard on one of my pc's though it was behind a belkin surge master and it was showing protection turned on (there is a green light that is still blinking - kind of giving the feeling that its working; but apparently not).

What is the best way to protect against one in the future?

ps: the other pc is also behind another power strip (monster power) and luckily its not dead (knock on wood).

the best way is to use a UPS. they completely isolate the computer from the wall plug.

UPS's can be costly though, so if you don't want to spend too much, buy a better quality surge protector. as you can guess, $10 surge protectors from Wal-Mart are useless.

Actually the surge protector i had was not a cheap one. Its rated for 1480 Joules. Here it is..
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/monster-powercenter-av-800-8-outlet-surge-protector/3774286.p?id=1218723191032&skuId=3774286#tab=overview

The one behind the belkin which was similarly rated was actually ok; the one behind monster surge protector got fried.

Now i see these two units which seem more industrial strength like:

http://www.amazon.com/APC-BR1500G-BACK-UPS-10-Outlet-1500VA/dp/B003Y24DEU/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_2

but.. they are rated for 650 and 355 joules respectively. Doesnt that mean they provide less protection than this cheaper strip rated for 3780 joules.
