So I have had my 840 Evo for a while and it seemed to be working great. I just noticed after running the magician benchmark, that my random read/writes look very slow. Sequential seems okay. Under device manager my harddrives are labeled as ATA Devices - should this say AHCI? Or is ATA normal? The device is plugged into my ATA/Sata3 ports (MaximusHero MOBO) & I have AHCI enabled under BIOS. I re-formatted the drive to reinstall windows a while back...could that have burned the thing up?

I took a screen snip of my benchmark but I dont see anywhere to attach to this post.

Random read: 81,278
Random write: 49,469 <----this one is almost half of what magician says I should be getting (90k)

Your Asus Maximus VI Hero motherboard is equipped with two ssd controllers:

6 x SATA 6Gb/s by Intel Z87
2 x SATA 6Gb/s by ASMedia ASM1061

Check your motherboard manual to make sure your ssd is plugged into one of Intel ssd headers instead of an ASMedia1061 ssd header.

Check to see if you have the latest Bios and Intel chipset drivers for your motherboard.

You used the term "reformatted" instead of "secure erase". Does that mean you formatted the ssd as if it were a hard disk drive?

The hard disk full format feature should not be used with ssd's.

Use secure erase to wipe the ssd clean and restore it to new condition. Look for the secure erase feature in the Samsung SSD Magician and follow the directions. When the secure erase is...

Use secure erase to wipe the ssd clean and restore it to new condition. Look for the secure erase feature in the Samsung SSD Magician and follow the directions. When the secure erase is completed do a clean install of Microsoft Windows. Windows will properly format the ssd automatically during the installation process.

Once you are up and running with the new installation, reopen Samsung SSD Magician; take a look at the disk management section; and run the performance optimization utility. Next, take a look at the system management section and select OS optimization. Select "maximum performance" and click on apply.

Hi,

I am new to this as well. I own a 840 Evo as well. I have enabled the RAPID mode at the bottom, under Advanced feature section. This has massively increased my benchmark results. My random read is now 102050, and my random write is now 77496. I then ran Performance Optimization, and then set the OS optimization to "maximum performance". Random read is now 127141, and my random write is 96200.

Thank you for the insight JohnnyLuck-

I flashed new BIOS & updated all drivers earlier this week to no avail. I uninstalled Intel Rapid Storage as well. I am definetly plugged into the intel SATAs. Magician software verifies i'm in AHCI mode...but my Device Manager says otherwise.

What does Dev, Mgr say?

Yogi

Under "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" I have:
"Intel 8 Series/C220 Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller"

Under "Disk Drives" I have:
"Samsung SSD 840 Pro Seri SCSI Disk Device"
"ST1000DM003-9YN1 SCSI Disk Device"

I hope that this helps!
