Adding 3TB storage HDD, how to initialize?

I'm booting from a 250GB SSD and want to add the 3TB HDD for storage. Do I use GPT? Based on what I've googled I need to use GPT because MBR won't work with drives that are larger than 2.2TB. However, I don't see any guides that explain adding a HDD when I'm not using it as a boot drive. Admittedly my google-fu is wonky lately so I may have missed something basic. Any ideas?

    Go into disk management (not device manager), select the drive and choose "initialize". You will be given the option of MBR or GPT. Select GPT.
