have been upgrading the 3 desktops in the house, 2 upgraded without issue but this one a dell studio xps 7100 poses interesting issues:

the motherboard and the setup guide provided specified I can upgrade to 16gb of RAM (from its original 6), so I went ahead and got myself 4x4gb sticks. As i removed the 2x2 and 2x1 modules and replace them with the new 4gbs the MB fail to start with the tell-tale 4 beeps RAM read/write error siren.

When I tried to switch the memory sticks to different places apparently as long as the first one remains the original ram dell provided (2 or 1 gb doesn't matter) it would work-but not the new 4gb. This is the first time i see such oddities-I tried memory diagnostic, flashing the board even remove CMOS battery for 10 minutes and still can't get it to work.

And now my system has a very odd 14GB setup with the old 2gb stick at the first slot. What gives? Any ideas?

Solution
It would bug me too.

Is there a bios update for the motherboard that might fix the problem?

You might open an incident with G.skil support. They are generally responsive.
Is your new ram compatible?
The ram web site will have a configurator that lists the supported kits for your pc.

Is the speed and voltage of the new ram the same as the original?

In the end, 14gb is an unusual size, but if it works then be happy.

First of all thank you for your help!

I indeed used the ram configurator with the site provided-and supposedly this should all be working

all of the old stick uses the standard 1.5V and the new one is the same without oc or any other fancy stuff

http://www.gskill.com/en/configurator?manu=52&chip=228&model=597

as Dell studio xps uses AMD785G chipset knowing dell's homebrew mobo wouldn't be on their list I checked every single selection and they all say the board can handle 16, besides of course the site/setup manual/crucial diagnostic agrees...and I have tested all four sticks in its remaining working slots (2/3/4) and they all work properly...in a way, I know I can live with 14gb-as odd as it is-yet just wanted to know why I cannot use the new stick on slot 1, that's gonna bug me real good lol.
