For a gpu I was thinking a Radeon hd 7870 or around that. I play stuff like bf3 skyrim minecraft and dayz any help would be awesome.

Go with a FX990

It have a AM3+ socket and if you find your Phenom II x4 is having troble keeping up with you. Then you can swap it with a FX8XXX or FX6XXX

Beside that is AMD MB dirt cheap atm.

If you are already using phenom ii x4 on any compatible motherboard, then you may not need to upgrade your motherboard. I guess you are getting hd 7870 for around $140, then upgrade your ram to 8 gb they both may cost you around $220, then rest money you can use to buy and hdd or ssd and upgrade your motherborard if needed with remaining money.

I don't have it in a motherboard yet I bought it a while back and tried to put it in my hp but it wasn't compatiable so I'm just looking to do a whole build around it for Christmas figured I already have a spare cpu might as well build around it.

So I think I'm gonna get the
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7850 2GB
But do you guys think I need the 2gb or will the 1gb work
Or could I jus go with a 7770 how big would th performance difference be

your looking at roughly about 500 dollars -530

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2g4Af

this should allow you to overclock your processor as well to accept the higher speed of 1600mhz as the ram will default to 1333mhz.

i recon you will get decent frames with skyrim and bf3 and minecraft dont expect it to hit ultra the processor will be a hinderance more medium to high depending on the game and res your playing btw what monitor are you using

whoa! your budget is $400 and you are spending $135 just on motherboard. not really a wise idea mate. spend none more than $90 for the motherboard and get hd 7870 or similar gpu and use the reamaing mney if on hdd or ssd etc....
The 99fx pro is only of any profit if you are crosfiring or sli'ing your gpu in which case you aren't. So don't spend that much on MOBO and don't get any less powerfull card than hd 7870 or gtx 660 or else you may be suffering in upcoming games.
