Downloaded onto DVD-R put disc into external drive but says disc not recognised

I downloaded from my computer a video so that I could play it through the television through my Alba DVD player but it says that the Disk is not recognised, it is a Sony DVD-R and the DVD player is a Alba DVD566 does anyone give an explanation, any other DVD plays ok.

Did you use software to actually make a Video DVD disc? Or did you just copy the video file onto a DVD?
If you made a real DVD then perhaps the player does not like the blank you used. If you just copied the file then the player may not have the codec to play that file type. Check the manual and convert the file to a compatible one.
