How do you work out how fast certain cards are?

When I say this, I mean like a car for example. A 50 horsepower engine is going to be faster then a 25hp engine. How does this work in graphics card? Is it something to do with core clock speed?

Just wondering because im buying a overclocked 7850 card and I'm trying to compare it with others.

    Actually, same happens at GPUs.
    Most of the times, in the same generation and brand (AMD or Nvidia) of GPUs the number of cores will tell you, how much powerful a GPU can be.

    With some more analysis, you will see that there are a few things more:
    1)core number
    2)clock speeds (mhz)
    3)memory bandwith which has a few sub categories:
    a)memory type: DDR3 or GDDR5
    b)memory bus: pe: 256bit will be better than 128bit
    c)memory mhz

    But in the end, especially in gaming cards (like 7850 and 650ti boost, and faster ones) core numders will give you how much powerful a card is.

    Same happens in cars too ;) hp isn't the only thing that makes a car fast. Its the weight of the car, the aerodynamics, the number of hp that goes to the wheel etc etc

    edit: If you are refering only to 7850s you can see which is the best just from the core clock.
    edit2: be sure to buy the 2GB version also :P. 1GB for gaming died a long time ago...

  4. The most practical way to find out how fast a card is, would be to put it into a competition against other cards, and see how many paintings they can each complete in one second.

    This is called benchmarking.
