Ok so I currently have an AsRock Extreme 3 970 board specs: 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16, 1 x PCIe x4, while I have crossfire enabled, also it has a power phase of 4 + 1 (not very stable for overclocking,

I really want to upgrade to the asus Crosshair v- formula z should? as 1. the power phase is 8+2 and it runs crossfire at 2x PCIe x16

or should i got for the AsRock Extreme 4 990fx with similar specs to the crosshair v??

Solution

Because its all about branding.

A Gigabyte 990FX UD4 for example can provide the same overclocking and features at less than half the cost.

so if i go for the gigabyte i can get the same performance as i would from an asus crosshair v .. just to explain for a sec I cant overclock my FX-8320 past 4.1Ghz as its unstable I want to push it to 4.6Ghz maybe a little more .. and i can do this on the gigabyte board .. on the gigabyte board my crossfire will run at x8 x8 i want it at x16 x16

If the chip itself can handle 4.6GHz and the cooling is good enough for 4.6GHz(wattercooled for example), then yes the board can do it.

16x16 is overrated.

What graphics cards are you xfiring?

The chip is capable of 5.6Ghz

At the moment I'm crossfiring HD 7850 Oc Editions however after xmas i'm upgrading to the r9 290 and planning on crossfiring those

Then you do not need 16*16 at all.

How do you know YOUR SPECIFIC chip is capable of 5.6GHz.

It told me in the UEFI Bios .. said Maximum Clock Speed 5.6GHz

maybe i dont need it but is its kinda what I want

Why wouldnt I need it?

LOL its not that simple.

Each and every single chip(even 2 exact same 8320 from the same batch of chips), is different when overclocked.
One can get to 4.2Ghz, while another will reach 5Ghz.

You CAN not know what they are capable of until you actually get it to a given speed and its stable.

8+2.

And nothing dumb about you. :)
You could not know this without actually knowing this.
So there you go.
