I can't overclock my i5-4670k at all without BSOD.

Hey,

I'm finding it impossible to overclock my i5-4670k. The highest that it will manage is 4.1ghz AT ABOUT 1.197v and even at that clock it will BSOD. It will run stress tests at this clock but at random moments it will just BSOD.

I'm using a Noctua NH-U14s to cool it but the cpu still seems to be running hot at Idle. The System Temp is about 32c and my Cpu runs about 38c at idle. During stress tests my CPU seems to hover around 60c, but I have seen it hover around 80c when I first overclocked it and the Vcore was automatically set to 1.397v at 4.2ghz.

Anything over 4.2ghz and the System simply won't boot into windows. And at 4.2ghz I get BSOD all the time.

I'm just frustrated that my CPU is basically unable to overclock stable. Right now I'm running the CPU at stock at 1.1v and have had no problems at all. Basically I want to know if I'm doing anything wrong. Or is my CPU or even 2 day old Noctua Heatsink the problem (I have reapplied thermal compound about 4 times).

Try increasing Vcore to 1.25 and see if that will give you 4.2 GHz. If not, increase Vcore in steps of 0.010 v. up to a max of 1.300 v. Set Vcore to "Override Mode" during stress testing and "Adaptive Mode" for all else.

I did this before and that was the vcore I used to get 4.2ghz, but I still got BSOD. I'll try what you said and slowly increase the Vcore, hopefully it will run stable. I don't think my Bios has the option to run the vcore in modes, and it is the lastest version.
 


I'd be willing to bet that it is in your BIOS, just hiding from you. Alternatively, D/L and install Intel Extreme Tuning Utility. Gigabyte may have a customized version on their website or on the CD that came with your MB, or just get it from Intel: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/motherboards/desktop-motherboards/desktop-boards-software-extreme-tuning-utility.html

I'm running 4.2ghz at 1.270v right now and the Prime95 tests are going fine. At 1.260v I BSOD'ed about 1 minute into the test. The thing is that in the past my Prime95 tests run fine but whenever I get into a game (Inparticular BF4) it will crash.

I'll download that Utility and see if it makes a difference.

Many ppl complain about BF4 crashes. They are very common. You're not alone! Apparently the developers do not have all of the bugs worked out yet.

Be sure that you have the latest GPU drivers and the latest BIOS version for your MB.

Do not expect a big "difference" with IXTU. It just makes it easier to set your OC settings without rebooting every time that you wish to make a change.

Also do I want my CPU Cache Voltage at Adaptive or Static? I think I changed it accidentally.

Currently running the IXTU stress test and I'll let you know if it runs fine.

Since I can't overclock my Core frequency past 4.2ghz should I try and change my Cache Frequency from 4.0ghz to 4.2ghz? Or will this not really wield much of a difference in power?

Also I set my Cache Voltage to 1.190v, for some reason it was just sitting at 0.900v before.

Edit: Well I ran IntelBurnTest with my core Voltage at static and the test at high and it passed fine. Highest Temp I got was 84c with it going down to 58c in between tests.

Why do you say that you can't get past 4.2 GHz? Have you tried Vcore all the way up to 1.300 v. yet?

Try reducing Cache Frequency to 35-38 and see if that helps your stability any. Ideally, Cache Frequency should = CPU Frequency, but this limits CPU OC ability. It is better to have a higher CPU OC at a reduced Cache Frequency than to have equal frequencies at a lower OC setting. Make sense?

I tried 4.4ghz with the Vcore at 1.3v and at adaptive, and I even reduced the cache to 3.5ghz but it was having none of it.

I've even tried 4.4ghz at 1.397v in the past when I first started overclocking it but it didn't even boot at that voltage. It just seems that I have a pretty mediocre 4670k when it comes to overclocking.
 


I see. Any chance of an RMA?

Perhaps. But I've never RMA'ed anything in the past, as this is the first PC I've built (Built about a month ago). Who would I contact to get an RMA (I'm from UK). I still have the Stock Heatsink but not the Packaging the CPU came in.

Apparently I can contact Intel Directly without the packaging and they would RMA it. But I'm wondering if it is even worth it. Or even if it's not my CPU that is the problem, but the Motherboard or Power supply etc.

Could the lack of overclocking potential be good enough to qualify for an RMA?

Yeah I thought so. I just hope the lack of overclocking potential is not a sign of a reduced lifespan for the CPU, But it is under a 3 year warranty so that's fine.

Well thanks for all the help, right now the CPU is running stable at 4.2ghz with no BSOD so far. I hope this remains the case.
