Graphics Card Recommendations? £250-300?

Hello all,

I've finally gotten my budget for my PC which is around £1000 to purchase components etc.. I'v picked all of the other components apart from the GPU. Now i'm looking to spend around £250-300 to last for a few years.

There is currently a deal on a GTX 680 for £199 from Gainward and I was wondering whether it was a good price to buy it? If not, which card would you recommend?

I'm looking to play ultra on most games but I've heard about AMD bring Mantle which would be available in the future. is this something to look out for?

Ok, Well will Mantle help in the future? Since the GTX 680 is essentially the same as the 770, would the 770 be a better choice since it is newer?

It will potentially help AMD hardware have an advantage, IF game developers adopt it, time will tell.

My mate was telling me that I should go for AMD if I play "opengl" games such as Minecraft and Counter Strike. If not, go for Nvidia. Since the only opengl game I play is Minecraft and Far Cry. I'm thinking possibly Nvidia is a better choice, although they do cost more money. Also the drivers are a lot more stable compared to AMD. He also said that, the Nvidia 790 will be coming out around 2014 which will reduce the cost of the 700 series graphics card in January. And potentially reduce the cost of the 690. Is this something I should go for?
