so I got this asus x66ic and when I try to start-up I get the message ''missing operating system'', I've tried switching the bios boot priority w/o any luck. since the cd player died a while ago I've put windows 7 on this usb but still it wont give the message ''press key to load from'' yet it does so on other pc's. when I take out the hdd and put it on my desktop I get the same message on my desktop saying missing os. (I don't have another laptop hdd so I can't switch hdd's in the laptop, only use the hdd from the laptop to put on a desktop) but when I use the usb w/o the hdd in the laptop I can boot from usb. does this mean my hdd is completely broken and can be thrown in the trashbin? or is it still fixable.

eagerly waiting some ones respond

Solution
If the driver can be seen in "Computer" as second HDD in a Desktop system, then the drive is fine for sure. This is only to check the drive, if its ok or not.

Next thing, if the drive is ok, then I think the USB device is not bootable, or you are doing something wrong, specifically in BIOS.

Or it can happen sometimes, that the media is bootable, but you are not getting the message " Press any key....CD/DVD/USB", so when the Lappy is booting, after the Splash screen, keep on pressing any key, until you see the big button of "INSTALL". See what happens.

To make sure the media is bootable or not try it on a desktop system.
Hi, first of all, did you make the USB drive as first boot device in BIOS ? Double check it.

Second thing, are you sure the USB drive is bootable ?

Third thing, did you make the Laptop HDD as a second HDD on Desktop ? If not, then plug in the Lappy's HDD to Desktop, then go to BIOS and under boot priority option make the Lappy's HDD as second HDD, save and exit the BIOS, the PC will restart and you would see the HDD on "Computer".

And I think the OS is got corrupted, so giving that message, and the HDD is hopefully fine.

I've set the removeable devices as first boot device yea, still i only get the missing operating system message, the bios recognizes the the hdd aswell.

I've tried booting it w/o the hdd in the lappy and it that was succesfull (using the usb as boot device) and it started windows files as if i used a windows 7

I havent tried putting it as second hdd in the desktop, only as main hdd.. good idea, ill try that next.
What to do after that, try to format it if i see the device as second in "computer"

Thanks for the respond, I hope it helps.. will react as soon as i tried it.

Well, In the end I succesfully logged into windows with the lappy HDD as second hard drive, and the ''computer'' was able to find the lappy's hard drive. it stated that I had to format it in order to check the files inside (even though it was empty) so I shut it off and inserted the usb to load windows files from usb. when the pc booted from usb I fromatted the lappy hard drive, shut the pc off again and made the lappy hard drive the only hard drive in the pc.

with the usb as boot device still I was able to install windows up untill I reached the ''reboot to complete windows isntall''. After it rebooted it said ''BootMGR is missing''.

checked the interwebz for some solution for this and after finding :
http://cyberst0rm.blogspot.nl/2007/04/how-to-fix-bootmgr-is-missing-in.html

I was able to repair it in ''repair my computer'' using the usb still as boot device.

after it repaired the hdd I made the lappy hdd the main hdd again (in other words, I took the usb out)
and it was completing the windows install after I took the usb out.

so in the end you were a big piece in succesfully getting the HDD back :D
so thanks for that, I already gave up on the HDD. Pretty much just said it was broken and needed a new one.

so you saved me quite some money :>

thanks for that

okay so we got a new problem. after I fully installed the lappy's hdd with windows 7 I put it back in the lappy to see if everything worked. it came up to the point where it says ''loading windows'' and it freezes before the windows logo even comes on the screen. and instant blue screen of death afterwards.

it starts rebooting automatically and it recommends me to launch startup repair, when it finishes the startup repair it gives me the following message;

Problem signature:
Problem Event name: StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature01: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature02: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature03: unknown
Problem Signature04: 21199882
Problem Signature05: AutoFailover
Problem Signature06: 4
Problem Signature07: NoRootCause
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

Any one got any idea's on how to solve this?

okay so it's working now so I'm not doing anything with the lappy anymore :p

in order to get rid of that BSOD error I just put in the USB with windows 7 as boot device

had to switch the bios order (i set prior 1 to removeable devices, which didn't work) so I had to set usb as first boot device.

formatted the HDD of the lappy again and reinstalled windows.

it's now working perfectly, even better than the day before the first error occured.

thanks for your time LoneWolf, you gave me the first step towards a working lappy again :>

You are welcome. Just keep one thing in mind, you have to do reinstall/repair-install the HDD/SSD when replacing, meaning if you put a Lappy's drive to a desktop or any other Lappy as a BOOT DEVICE then you have to do reinstall/repair-install OS.

The driver and controller for every MB is different, so the drive wont run, unless you reinstall/repair-install OS. And thanks for your kind words. Cheers.
