Who here has a 290 or 290x? ....well I do (powercolor 290) Sorry, but where are these guys getting the 90+ temps and high noise?
Downloaded cpuz and it said 58 degrees while playing BF4 (ultra sets.), and the noise is probably equal to my old 560ti from zotac. My side panel fan case makes most of the noise (Carbide 500r) and I have my pc next to me on the desk probably less than 18 inches from my mouse mat and keyboard.

Can anyone do a youtube video of those high temps and sound? or I just got lucky and got a good one lol?

The R9-290 isn't as noisy as the R9-290X, but the MSI would most likely be much more silent. If you have good airflow inside your case, I think the 290 would be awesome. I would definitely choose the 290 over the 280X. Remember the fan doesn't always stay at 60% so it won't be as noisy as some would have you believe.

Uhm? How? Its the same thing.

Anyway. OP

The 290 with a aftermarket cooler would be my vote.

I don't care for noise, I play with headsets, what is important to me is playing without any issues

How can a stock R9-290 and an R9-280X sporting aftermarket cooling be the same thing?

the R9 290 is a great value for the money and you can always buy aftermarket cooling if you want to over clock later even stock its faster than the 280x . although they can be tricky to find ,they tend to sell out fast apparently LTcoin mineers found them very efficient also so often prices become inflated on retailers sites.
