Hi
I've seen a lot of forums asking whether a certain type of ram is compatible with a motherboard but non explaining the symptoms of whether RAM is not compatible.

So what are the signs? For example, PC wont boot up etc..

I'm only asking as I think i bought some incompatible ram for my first build and I couldn't get past the windows 8 logo on the windows 8 install, the PC would just restart itself and restart the process again..

Any advice would be brilliant
Thanks

99% of the time, as long as your RAM and motherboard both say DDR3, or DDR2 if it;s really old, it will be compatible. If you have some really high speed ram, like in the 3000 or 4000 speeds, not all mobos support it. If this is true, just go into the BIOS and clock down your ram.

What speed of ram did you get? DDR3-1600 would be a standard.

The ram compatibility is stated in your motherboard specs.

There is also probably a list on the site for the board , but those lists aren't complete , but do give you an idea to what you can purhase.

The RAM I bought was 1 8GB stick of Integral DDR3 1333MHz
Could it be possible that the RAM caused my problem?

I have since ordered some new RAM by Crucial and they guarantee that it is compatible.

DDR3-1333 Is supported in pretty much every DDR3 motherboard, ram should not be the issue.

Well on the desktop it won't get past the logo but on my laptop it will? Also I have a gtx 760 and thought that might be the problem, i removed it and tried using the integrated graphics but I got the same result.

What do you mean by that? What did you put in your laptop? The hard drive? Somehow?

To the answer above I meant the installation CD sorry for not mentioning that.

So my new RAM came today from Crucial, I switched the Integral With the Crucial, stuck in the installation disk and prayed as it booted up..

aaaaaand it did! All my stressing thinking £600 had gone to waste all because of a bad stick of RAM
Moral of the story?
Don't cheap out on the RAM!

Thanks for everyones help
