I'm looking to introduce encryption in to my environment that my users will not find objectionable. We've used True Crypt in the past which led to a ton of non-compliance and a million headaches. I'm looking for something that will be mostly transparent to my users to minimize my annoyances. What is everyone using? If you've implemented recently, what kind of issues can I expect? We're in healthcare so regulatory compliance is a must(and sadly lacking atm).

Microsoft's BitLocker is available on Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise editions and Windows 8 Professional and Enterprise editions. Your computers need TPM (trusted platform module) hardware. Most relatively newer business / enterprise systems (but few consumer-grade systems) come with TPM.
For additional requirements and info, see:

  • To ease BitLocker deployment/manageability, I recommend Windows 7/8 Enterprise editions and Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack. Enterprise editions of Windows 7/8 are essentially Windows volume licenses + software assurance. Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack can be licensed by software assurance customers -- at additional cost.

I'd also agree with bitlocker. I've started rolling out bitlocker (TPM only) in my organisation and the end users don't even know its there! the computer will automatically release the encryption key and boot when it's satisfied that there are no keyloggers or dodgy boot file alterations (it's cleverer than I'm describing).

However at the end of the day it needs to be "security>users demands". If you're getting too much backlash from end users explain simply why this "annoyance" is in place (most users think that because there's a log-on password their laptop is safe from thieves). If they're still not satisfied speak with management and put your case there and send a wide-scale email if necessary.
