Has anyone ever heard of a program called Remote Computer Manager? It is put out by a company called S.K. Software who also make a product called MyLanViewer. However I have been able to find absolutely nothing on the company other than a CNET page and the following website: http://www.mylanviewer.com/ . They have no documentation for their products and the price is ridiculously cheap (a site license for $500 and an enterprise one for $800 although whether that's a one time expense or a subscription is not stated). The bottom line is I am suspicious that this is a scam. Conceivably they could be a small company, but the paucity of information is setting off alarm bells.

The software would be installed on the public computers at the University Library where I work . These are not on the school's domain and are instead part of a workgroup, hence the need for software such as this. We are looking for ways to simplify the management of around 60 - 70 computers.

Not much. Our computers are all physically located within the same building so it is possible to go around to each of them to troubleshoot issues. We'd like to be able to update programs without having to go to each individual machine. Some of that can be done via batch scripting. Also the ability to shutdown and restart would be nice. Someone over at Spiceworks mentioned Remote Desktop Connection Manager which sounds like it will be very helpful. Remote Desktop Connection is already one of my favorite Windows components and so anything that works with it would be a good solution in my book. There is also a program simply called Remote Desktop Manager which also has a free version. Since the budget situation is real tight I might go with one of those tools.

I used it for the last month. have McAfee Enterprise and it showed clean. This isn't for remote controlling PC's with RDP. Its a mass desktop management tool. Think MS SMS/SCCM or Altiris CMS (client management suite). If you already know what those acronyms mean, this product is probably not what you need. If you don't, then Google what you can do with them then check out the super cheap price of this app for small and medium size companies. for $99, its a steal. I use it to push apps, for group policy updates and changes, running scripts on all desktops, inventorying hardware and software on all desktops and lots more. In fact i just used it last night, i changed the desktop background image and modified screen saver settings in AD and use this tool to immediately force a GP update at our site. Bam, no waiting, no reboot etc.
In your workgroup case, you would need an account on each workstation with the same creds (and local administrator priv). It also does linux/LDAP.
If you really have 60-70 computers, use 2 of them to make a domain. Its would make you site much more controlled and more reliable. Its very easy.
